In this episode, step-by-step instructions for creating a bootable installer on a USB drive or stick for macOS Monterey.

Now that we have macOS Monterey in it's final form (at least until a dot release), we should think about making a bootable recovery and installable version on an external drive for that day when the Mac decided it just does not want to work right.

Once you have downloaded the installer from the App Store, STOP! Do not install, do this first.

Enter the following command at the terminal to start the install process to an external drive before upgrading your machine. Why? Because if you install it using the one you downloaded from the App Store then the files you need for this will be deleted after the upgrade.

Just open the terminal and put this in.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ \Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/<volume name>

Just replace <volumename> with your desired drive and let it run, once completed you can boot a Mac into safe mode and start installing.
