It is time for me to post the latest game development update journal for you all. Over the 2022 Christmas holiday, I decided it was time to send the first beta to a closed group of folks to start getting feedback of all types for Project H8ck.

So far, things are going great. Only a couple of bug reports and some good feature requests. Which is the exact feedback I was looking for.

It is always challenging with the first pre-release because, you know, going in, there are problems that are still being worked on, but you do not want to give the testers too much information; otherwise, it will affect their playtesting.

Here are the changes and fixes in the next beta release due to feedback.

  • It is updated to the latest version of Unity.
  • When you have a zero balance on any given item and receive a negative event, it still appears and is performed in the event log, even though you had none. This is now ignored if the balance is zero.
  • Some screen scaling issues appear to crop items on specific screen resolution ratios. I am still working on this, as it should be scaling to fit. This does not appear to be the case, and I am working on debugging this and hopefully improving the situation in the next release.
  • Dark coin cost increases have been scaled back slightly to make it easier for new players to start and progress into coin generation at a more reasonable rate. This means more purchases are possible quicker at the beginning of the game.
  • Random event last ten console log is now saved between sessions.

One thing that I am trying to make the best decision on for the first 1.0 release is the Boss fights. I may hold off on those for a release after the first version since it will take a little while for players to generate enough hacker power to fight them, and it buys me some time to decide on the final mechanics for that part of the game.

If you have thoughts on any of this, I would love to hear them. You can comment on this post or contact me using the site contact form.
