The changing attitude toward phone cameras

A Creators Journey, Season 9, Episode 15

As a long-time photographer (and getting older guy!), it is hard to think of taking photographs without my dedicated cameras.

On a recent trip, I did not use a dedicated camera for the first time and instead used my iPhone 12 Pro Max camera. A more than capable device, but not something I would typically use for trying to capture pinnacle images for processing later.

Not to take anything away from the iPhone camera, it is more than capable and is backed up by some ingenious software.

However, I use my dedicated cameras for two excellent reasons when it comes to getting the images I want.

  1. The lenses give me the sharpness and bokeh when I need it and in a very controlled way (by me).
  2. The sensors are better at keeping the noise down at lower levels and giving me cleaner images for post-processing.

Now I hear readers and listeners saying, but phone cameras are excellent these days. And, yes, they are. But they are not as versatile as a body with interchangeable lenses and total manual control.

I should point out that this was not a dedicated photography trip. Otherwise, this would be a very different conversation.

I will say, though, not carrying the bulk around and the undeniable fact in public that I'm a guy with a camera taking photos was a huge bonus.

Nobody thinks twice about anyone taking photographs with a phone, but pull out something that looks like a camera, and attitudes can be very different.

So what are your thoughts? Is your attitude changing to the gear you carry and how you use it?
